Peacocks are well-known and beloved for their striking, decorative plumage. However, they’re not all as vibrant. White peafowl have an ethereal, bleached version of the traditional peacock look and is arguably as stunning.

The birds are typically not albino as they’re commonly described, but instead leucistic which means that they’re genetically predisposed to a disorder that deprives them, or at least a portion of them.Find out more about white peafowl, such as their rarity and why they are so many of them in captivity, and the significance they stand for.

White Peafowl Are a Genetic Mutation

White peafowl can be described as albino, however albinism is a condition that can cause extreme pale skin. Albinism in peafowls is extremely uncommon and has been largely ignored. The paper published in 1965 on albinism in different birds revealed that only 99 individuals of 8 species of quails peafowl, and pheasants have ever been identified. Athers appear white due to an inherited mutation, known as leucism that blocks melanin from accumulating inside their feathers. Leucism can also affect buffalo, horses, giraffes deer, axolotls along with other bird species.

They are Always Of the Indian Species

There are three species of peafowl. leucism is reported to occur in just one which is that of the Indian ( Pavo cristatus) species. 2 Indian peafowls are the most prevalent and well-known. Male Indian peacocks sport the distinctive blue and green feathers that we associate with peafowl. Female peahens appear less flashy however they still sport the green neck with the emerald hue.

Leucism is thought to be a condition that is a problem that only affects Indian peafowl, since this is the most common species kept in captivity. white peafowl can be breed to be leucism-resistant.

These are Actually Born Yellow

Peafowl that are white aren’t pure white right from the mother’s womb. They’re actually born with yellow, and become white as they grow older. Peachicks, as young ones are known come into clutches of 3 to six. If they’re not leucistic they’re light brown in color like a game bird’s. Peachicks can easily be mistaken for an eagle that is young.Leucistic peafowl start to change color at the same time that peacocks be able to see their colors within a period of one to three years.

They can be Half or Partially White

Contrary to albino species Leucistic animals may have white spots on only a portion of their body. The unusual coloration may be visible just half of the bird’s body, or even on some feathers. There are a variety of terms to describe the way it appears:Pied white peafowl have the mix of white and traditional Indian blue hues.

The black-shoulder pied-peafowl has typical green and blue colors and white wings, white underparts and a spot on their cheeks. The black-shoulder peahens are mostly white, with bright spots.

White Peafowl Are incredibly rare

Leucism can be regarded as a recessive disease that means it is able to be passed down but concealed beneath the dominant gene, which causes patterning and pigmentation. To allow a white peafowl develop,

it must be given the recessive gene from both parent. If both parents exhibit traditional colors, the chances of their offspring having leucistic color is one in four. If both show leucistic coloring It is likely that the condition will be passed on to the next generation.

 They’re usually kept in captivity

White peafowl are extremely rare in the wild. In fact, it’s widely thought by peafowl experts that they do not appear in nature but there is no evidence to support this theory. Nowadays, they are found more frequently in captivity since they are specifically bred to produce their unique coloring. Leucistic peacocks are offered by breeders for around $150 to $250.

If white peafowl did exist in the wild they’d be starkly different from their surroundings. This would make it hard for them to live.

Peacocks are more afflicted than Peahens Due to lack of color

There isn’t any documentation on reproduction rates between white peafowl that live in nature, it makes sense that peacocks struggle to attract peahens due to their beautiful multi-colored colors. When they are courting peahens peacocks are known to spread their feathers in stunning displays. The vibrancy of their feathers, along together with the length of them and their overall quality — are thought of by the female when she decides whether she would like to mat with the peacock.
